Ultimate indulgence
Natural (or mined) diamonds are one of Earth's oldest materials, formed under extreme heat and pressure over millions of years. Surfacing in rare volcanic eruptions, they are of limited supply. Extraction is highly intensive with a large carbon footprint.
Price factors
• The high price reflected in their rarity.
Grading
The 4Cs GIA world standard (since 1953).
• Cut – shape and brilliance
• Colour – varying degrees of hue
• Clarity – gauge of perfection purity
• Carat – measure of weight
Identical alternative
Lab-grown (or man-made/cultured) diamonds are chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds. Created in a lab replicating nature’s process, with fewer imperfections. Certified as real diamonds, they bypass adverse mining for increasingly energy-efficient methods.
Price factors
• Often 50% of a comparable natural stone
• Decreasing with advancing technology
• Rarity is not an issue, nor cost factor
• Lower long-term resale value
Grading
• Premium and Standard (since 2025).
